Victorian Engraved Silver Cross Locket
England, c. late 19th century
9K Gold, repoussé and hand-engraved
This finely preserved Victorian oval locket exemplifies the era’s mastery of ornamental metalwork and devotional symbolism. The front is centered with a raised Latin cross, crisply delineated against a ground of densely engraved foliate scrolls—an emblem of faith, protection, and remembrance. The reverse features an elaborate repoussé floral composition framing a vacant cartouche, originally intended for a monogram or dedication.
The locket opens on a concealed hinge, retaining its original proportions and depth, characteristic of late-19th-century construction. The engraved surfaces show confident handwork, with rhythmic line engraving and soft repoussé relief that catches light with remarkable dimensionality. Such lockets were worn close to the heart, often serving dual roles as devotional objects and personal memorials. Their symbolism, craftsmanship, and intimate scale reflect the Victorian reverence for sentiment, memory, and faith—values central to both personal adornment and private ritual during the period.
